Two switch Dimmer Unit Fitting

Post by Fatcockney » Sun Jan 31, 2010 10:37 pm

I have an existing two switch unit in my lounge, which switches each ceiling lamp on separately.

I am replacing this with a two switch dimmer unit.

The existing switch is wired like this:

Blue wire (red sleeve) into A1
Yellow wire (red sleeve) into Bcom
A2 is empty
Red wire into Acom
Red wire from Acom into B1
B2 is empty

The dimmer is in two halves each with L1, L2 and a third hole.

How do I wire the dimmer please???

Thanks

Sound like you have a 3 core & earth cable with a strap across the switch.
The red will be your live into the switch & the blue & yellow will go back to each one of the lights.
Place the red into one of the third hole’s with a short length of red cable to the other third hole. (This will be the C on your other switch)
Now place the yellow in L1 of one switch & the blue in the L1 of the other switch. The two L2’s will be empty. Naturally make sure all is off at the fuse board & all your terminations have no copper wire showing.

Com becomes L1
A1 becomes L2

So

Blue wire (red sleeve) into L2 (switch A)
Yellow wire (red sleeve) into L1 (switch B)
A2 is empty
Red wire into L1 (switch A)
Red wire from L2 (switch B)
B2 is empty

As long as A and B are not swapped getting L1 and L2 wrong way around will not matter.

Some switches are marked Com and L1 and others L1 and L2.

Thanks for the responses guys. I'm away from home at present, but will have a dart at this tomorrow and will leave some feedback for you when I'm done.

Cheers
