Victorian Terranced Property - Is This Asbestos in the Loft Area?

Post by sheppy16 » Tue Sep 30, 2014 4:52 pm

Hi All,

I hope this is not the wrong forum and also that this isn't a question that comes up all the time. I'm the new owner of victorian terraced house in London which I'm concerned has a few asbestos problems. As I know nothing about most home issues I thought it might help if I posted a few pictures of the grey powder I've discovered in my loft. It is evident where ceiling beams are attached to the wall that separates two lofts. I've heard conflicting advice as to whether it could be asbestos or not but I'd rather not waste money on a professional survey if it just looks like perished mortar dust for example.

The property is late victorian and the roof is the original slate roof. Below are links to some photos that are stored on my Dropbox cloud.

Cheers in advance

Hi sheppy16

That's a very common sight in lofts of that age. It's only mortar dust, nothing to worry about.

Thanks for your reply proptech,

Your advice fits with that of a builder I was showing the picture to today so I'll stop puss footing around and get up there with a hoover and dust mask to sort it out.

Thanks again!
