Are accumulators worthwhile?

by stindig » Fri Jan 18, 2008 5:42 pm

I own a large house which currently has two 25-year old gas boilers and a cold water storage tank in the roof.

I want to replace this with a modern boiler (possibly Viessmann Vitodens 300 49Kw) and about 400 litres of new hot water tank(s) in an unvented system.

I have 4 boys and am planning on installing large headed showers so we need a lot of capacity.

Water pressure from the mains is good.

I've received a recommendation that I use an accumulator to bolster the flow rates of the showers. Does anyone have any experience of accumulators? Do they really make a difference? Why not just use a larger tank?

Thanks, stindig
