cold water flows back up hot pipe in kitchen

Post by tallpaul » Tue Oct 16, 2007 11:32 am

I've just installed a new mixer tap in my kitchen. By themselves cold & hot water flow just fine. However, when I have them both one, the cold seems to overwhelmed the hot, with only cold water coming out of the tap. When it's switched off, the water from the hot tap stays cold for a few seconds, suggesting that the cold water is flowing back up the hot pipe !

The cold water is mains fed; the hot water from the hot water tank, topped up from the cold tank in the loft (so it's low pressure).

Any ideas how I can overcome this ?

I've tried turning down the pressure on the cold by closing the value a degree, which is in the pipe feeding the tap. But no real difference.

Thanks for any advice.

if the same happens then its a water problem
