Component Needed for Kitchen Waste Pipe

by MrExuberance » Sat Sep 23, 2017 7:30 pm

Hi

I have recently moved home and the waste pipe under the kitchen sink has an open top. You can see in the photo that the pipe directly from the sink that connects to the vertical part of the pipe does so near the top. This means that when any water is poured down the sink (unless very slowly) water splashes out of the pipe at the top. I've used cleaner to ensure that any grime is gone, but the problem persists.

The issue is is that the washing machine waste has to go through this pipe as well.

My question is... is there a component/adapter that I can buy to actually attach the washing machine pipe to the waste pipe? If so is there a cap/lid I could attach to "close" the pipe?

My knowledge of DIY and plumbing is zero so any help appreciated.
