Concreted up chimney and hearth. Can it be saved?

by houseofchocolate » Tue Feb 02, 2010 12:23 pm

Hi - we've just bought this older place (built 1945ish) and opened up the bricked up fireplace in the lounge only to find that half of the fireplace has been filled up with concrete, about two thirds of it. We already knew that the chimney had been removed, but we were going to get that re-built. On investigation I discovered that the top of the chimney, accessable from the loft, has been concreted over as well. I did not know if concrete had been poured down the chimney!! Would it be possible to remove the concrete from the fireplace fairly easily and who could I contact if this is more than a DIY job? Any advice would be gratefully recieved.[/b]
