Cost Of Buying Land

Hi, Can anyone help or advice me?
I am considering buying some land that is is next to my property. Has anybody got a clue what is the correct or fair way to value this?
I have been told that it is; Now wait for this!
The value of my property divided by the sq foot in my house then divide that again by 3 and that equals the price per sq foot of building land.
Can anybody understand that or should I email Carol Vordeman?
