Do i need a stepped trench foundation?

My garden is at two levels. First section is level with the back door going 6metres out then it steps up 1200mm to the next level and another 6 metres out.
I want to build a wall alongside my garden. How do i deal with the foundation at the 1200mm change of garden level? Stepped trench foundation?
