Door Handle Replacement (Lever Latch)

I am looking to replace brass door handles with new chrome ones. The new handles need to cover the marks left by the original handles. I ordered new Victorian Scroll handles but when it came to fitting it soon became apparent that the handles were unsuitable due ti the fact that the spindle on the new handle is not in the middle of the back plate (more towards the top) whereas the original spindle was right in the middle of the back plate - thus the screw holes from the original plate are showing! and the door can't be repaired (shitty plywood door!).

I have trawled the websites looking for something more suitable but have drawn a blank - all handles with back plates have the spindles off centre.

Any help/suggestions welcome
