Door handles on aluminium doors

I need to replace the mortice sash lock on my back door. To get the lock out I need to remove the door handles. The handles are mounted on a metal plate which, I think, just clips on to a plastic base plate attached to the door. I cannot seem to unclip them and I don't want to force them too hard in case I break something.
Any ideas?
