by geoff1057 » Fri May 21, 2010 6:48 pm

i need to fit a newel post at the top of the stairs. the stairs are fittedto a joist ,do i cut away some of the stride and riser of the top stair ,drop my newel post INFRONT of the joist ,level with the second stair, then fixit to the joist, then fix stair to the newel . OR do i do similar cut away less of the stride and riser of the top stair ,cut newel post to make a halving joint,so it sits ON TOP and INFRONT of the joist.then glue and fix it...... hope someone with joinery experience can understand what iam asking, and maybe able to help me , or advise on another way to do it.... thanks ..Geoff

geoff1057,
Not sure about your proposals but if the stairs are already in place bolt the newel post to the joist.
end

if not confident you may want to seek professional advice. it's imperative for safety that the newel posts are fitted correctly.
