Kitchen Light Confused?!

I have gone to change my kitchen light (managed the rest of the house no probs). And there is only a green and red wire connected to the light fitting...and it works. But clearlt when i come to connect the new light fitting it doesn't.........confused please help!

There is no way a green and red wire should run a lamp. Green is a restricted colour and can only be used for earth in a very old system now we use green and yellow. I can't envisage anyone being able to help without visiting your house so I would say you will need to call an electrician. It may be that someone in the past has done some dangerous cheating so be very careful.
