I'm currently looking at extending the loft hatch and want to know if this is feasible. Any help appreciated.

Currently:

If I was to use 2 x 5" by 1" side by side instead of 5"x2" would this work for the frame ?. If not I can get 5" x 2" but it's not as easy to get.

Does that that the particular joist I need to cut goes directly under the middle of the upright post make a difference ?
