Paint over french polish

Can I paint a fire surround that has been french polished? It's softwood that has been stained and then french polished. It's looking a little tired so I thought I may paint it, to give it a new lease of life?

What it made of? Give it a good sand first to get rid of any grease dirt and should hopefully be ok. Marble i would not bother. granite same.
