Polystyrene balls in loft - ok or not?

Can anyone tell me if it is illegal to have polystyrene balls as loft insulations? I have had 2 quotes for new loft insulation and the chap said it was illegla... then the next guy did not even mention them! Thanks

polystyrene illegal,I dont know about illegal but its not the best insulation as it could be dangerous near naked electrical fittings,downlighters etc.I would use an industrial hoover to suck it out .
