removing trodden in putty from terracotta floor tiles

Disaster! Putty has been trodden into a large area of newly laid hand-made terracotta floor tiles, which have had only one coat of sealant. The putty has hardened and is now well ingrained. My efforts at gently scraping are not making any impact. Can you help please?
