return pipes hotter than feeds?

by amonks » Tue Oct 30, 2007 2:10 pm

Hi

Im looking to fit TRV's to the rads in my house which is a standard 2 up / 2 down grav fed central heating system.

None of the rads in the house currently have TRVs but the rads in the new conservatory do.

That said, I noticed that the return pipes for the rads both in the conservatory and in the house are hotter than the flow pipes; the opposite of what I expected. Why is this?

IE when I turn the heating on, for the conservatory rads the return pipes get hot way before the feed pipe with the TRV. Has the rad been installed with the TRV on the wrong side ?

As for the rads in the house, they too appear to get hotter on the return?

I think your getting mixed up between the flow and return, the flow get hot first. With most TRV's now - it doesn't matter whether they are fitted to the flow or return.

If the radiators heat up - leave them alone :-)
