Rust Stains

by Iestyn » Sun Aug 24, 2008 11:11 am

I'm about to paint the porch and I've noticed some rust stains where nails have been painted over. What can I do to stop the same thing happening again?

to be absolutely sure to stop the rust coming through again you must first remove all traces of it.

expose the nail head and clean all rust off it and expose fresh metal. paint the head with hammerite, or better, galvafroid. this should help prevent the rust recurring. then a metal primer.

it might help to bang the nail in deeper first, if it's close to the surface, using a punch.

then fill with a two-part filler, sand, prime and paint.

but remember to get rid of all the rust and the staining first, otherwise it will come back through. rust is a very persistent stain.
