water table

the water table in my basement rises up and down (as it should). There is generally a puddle at the lowest point which increases and decreases with the weather. I was thinking of digging a 12" sq pit and putting a pump with a float switch. i expect this will do the trick, however is there any other suggestions? thanking someone in advance.
