Wax or Varnish ? Help! Help, advice, information, answers and tips on all types of flooring from laminate and carpet to timber and vinyl

Have just sanded the wood block parquet in our hall. The obvious choice is to coat it with a clear satin varnish. However, a friend suggested using a water based acrylic emulsion wax. Now I am totally confused! I am looking for whichever choice is easy to apply and look after.
