Ballast and 20mm Gravel for 20mm Limestone Gravel Patio?

by DanH » Wed Apr 28, 2021 8:46 am

Hi,

Hope all is well.

I’m mid-way into a small corner 3 x 3 gravel patio project - for use as seated area.

I’ve excavated 150mm of top soil and I have laid a weed membrane.

My question is: can I use ballast and 20mm gravel as my sub-base? The reason is that I have an abundance of both free of charge at my disposal.

For the top layer I will be using Marble Gravel 8-18mm.

Thank you in advance. Happy to take on board any comments or tips!

Thanks,

Dan

Hi danh
For a patio with pedestrian traffic this should be fine but you might find it beneficial to use some sort of geotex matting under the marble to stop migration of the shingle.
