I'm going through my house replacing all the switches and sockets and came across this (fused spur I think it's called) next to a downstairs fireplace. It shares the same back box as the socket to the left and is fed from that socket (and only connected to that socket). I assume it had a function when there was a back boiler in the fireplace. Can I just remove this fused spur (but leave the wiring) and replace it with another single socket, or remove the wiring and fused spur and replace the single socket with a double?
A double socket will not fit as that back box is designed to have two single items. (There is a "support rail" in the middle which would prevent you putting in double socket) Another single socket it is then.
