Casement Windows

Postby Jim.h » Tue Nov 02, 2021 11:21 am

Hi Guys, looking for some help here….. My house has top hung wooden casement windows over 30 years old but still keeping the cold out. The locking mechanism on some of the windows is seized solid and I can’t see a way to ease them off. The central handle in the centre of the lower frame operates a square drive and when the handle is rotated through 90 degrees locking bars emerge from the lower outside edges to lock the windows……..the mechanism are all stiff and some are seized…..is there a way to access the mechanism so that it can be repaired?

Hi Jim.h.
Basically no. Try removing the handles and use a longer bar to turn the mechanism. Once opened use something like wd40 to lubricate every moving part. Spray into any recess when is may get to the mechanism.

The top hung wooden casement window is locked but the mechanism is not attached to the handle and can’t be manipulated. This is an old unit and the lock comprises a metal bar protruding either side of the lower frame. Just wondering if the window can be opened by removing some of the frame on the outside of the window allowing access to the locking bar

Hi Jim.h
Assuming you have a storm proof casement (where there is a flange on the outside of the casement) the only access will be through the handle hole. If you remove the handle you may be able to manoeuvre the locking yoke to release the side pins.
