Electric fire problem

Can the back unit of an electric fire be sunk into a wall cavity.

Stupidly bought a fire and surround without checking their compatibility.

What do the manufacturers instruction recommend?
I can't see why not as long as cavity wall is deep enough to give ventilation and no structual problems or enviroment problems will arise from this.
