Joining stairs to skirting ?

At the top of the stairs the side rail is plain. I have 5" torus running round the landing. How do i make the join between the 2 ?

Do I have to cut off 2" of skirting and run it down the side of the stairs to make a seemless joint.

you wouldn't normally run skirting up the stairs. just terminate it top and bottom.
