Natural Slate Tiles too Heavy for Plasterboard Wall around Bath?

Post by mrpreston83 » Thu Jun 18, 2015 6:47 pm

We are due to tile round our bath with some natural slate tiles (Sheera Modular Slate) , there approx 11mm thick and I roughly worked out the weight to be for just the tile 29kg per square meter, with adhesive is this going to be far too heavy for newly installed moisture board (plaster board)?

Thanks

29kg per square metre does sound incredibly heavy. I'm sure it would be fine for a very small area but it would worry me for a larger area like that. I would be tempted to do a test area on a piece of board that hasn't been fitted to see how it would cope with the weight. I can't work out a way you could calculate how safe it would be so next best thing would be to mock up a small area if you can to check if it will cope.

Plan B would be to fake it with a quality imitation of the slate. These panels are lightweight, waterproof and easy to install.
