I had a room plastered, applied 2 mist coats, but hairline cracks appeared on one of the walls.
I decided to apply a couple of coats of polycell basecoat paint and that has worked fine. Unfortunately, on applying 2 top coats of B&Q matt paint, the whole wall now has tiny spider\crazy paving cracks all over it, almost like the paint has struggled to adhere to the basecoat.
and use a decent quality paint. personally i don't use anything other than dulux although johnstones and leyland also make very good paints.
i never touch the chain stores' own paint products, quite simply they are a load of old **** and a complete waste of money. don't think that it's all the same stuff just in a different can. there's a reason why is half the price of the main brands.
and personally i don't find crown paints to be much better, though others do argue.
i agree with rosebery that lining paper is probably the best solution.
