Loft conversion and Can I Remove an Awkward Beam That's in the way?

Post by steved1953 » Fri Jul 20, 2018 4:38 pm

Hi
I know it's an often asked question but. I've strengthened and boarded the loft in my semi bungalow. It has a hipped roof with concrete tiles. There is one cross beam between the purlins that I keep banging my head on. Can I replace it with extra beams ( collar beams ? ) further up the rafters. I was thinking on every rafter ( then I could board those for a ceiling ). I could also add steel straps from rafters to cross beams and purlins. The purlins are about 8" x 2". and 4.5 m long.

I know a picture would help, but I haven't found an 'add image' control yet
