Smoke Alarms and Heat Alarms - Using Existing Alarm Panel and Building Regs

by collectors » Thu Aug 29, 2013 11:06 am

Hi, we are building an extension and wanted to know if smoke and heat alarms that work off our alarm panel are OK to use in the new extension under building regs??.

Thanks

Why would you think they were not?

Hi, sorry for the late reply. (forgot to tick the box).
The security alarm was fitted by myself with 2 smokes on the existing system. I would need at least 1 heat detector in the new kitchen & possibly an extra smoke, but wasn't sure if this would be OK under the part P if i did this myself as the electrician wont get involved with alarms.

Thanks.

Firstly, you need to check with your insurance company whether they would cover you if the fire detectors were installed by yourself. The same applies for an intruder alarm - insurance companies usually require it to be installed by a NACOSS approved company. You may get a significant discount from your insurance company if it is monitored too.

You need to look at Building Control Guidance Note 16 in relation to installing smoke detectors in dwellings:
