Tiles in living room and laying laminate over existing tiles?

by Oxfordwill » Wed May 27, 2020 2:12 pm

Hi.
Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere on this forum. I am also a DIY novice.

Our living room and kitchen has tiles on the floor. There is also a floor heating system under the tiles. I would like to replace the tiles with floorboards or laminate flooring. Can I just lay floorboards or laminate over the existing tiles?

I have read that using laminate is the best option due to the uneven nature of tiles but unsure about the heating system under the tiles.

I ideally do not want to dig up all the tiles as this will be a large and messy job.

Any advice appreciated.

Hi oxfordwill
Laminate flooring should be fine provided the uneven floor is within the tolerances specified by the manufacturer and you use an underlay intended for underfloor heating.
If you use laminate, this with the underlay will insulate the floor so you may need to advance your heating start time.
