Tiling onto timber is a bad idea Darren as a) it dries the adghesive out so quickly because it is so porous, and b) Timber moves, expanding and contraction all the timke especially in humid places like kitchens and bathrooms. You can have another go by painting the timber with two, undiluted coats of PVA adhesive ( See our project on PVA Adhesive) and then tiling. The PVA gives a waterproof skin on the timber and allows the adhesive to stick properly.
