Tiling over old asphalt tiles or black adhesive

by Bonding » Sat Jul 04, 2009 7:53 pm

Hi, The floor I want to tile is mostly bare concrete, but two small areas (3 to 4 sq meters) are problematic. One has old asphalt tiles on it. The old tiles are very well stuck down on concrete and flush with the new concrete floor. The second problem area has the old tiles removed but has a layer of black tile adhesive still in-situ. I've read some webpages that say the old adhesive contains asbestos. So, I'd rather not disturb this stuff and just tile directly over the top. Can someone advise as to which products and methods to use? Or perhaps the best way to remove these old products and make good so that normal floor tile adhesive can be used. Thanks in advance.. Chris.

Prime over the bitumen / old tiles with Weber PR 301 epoxy primer. Tile over it whilst it still tacky.

What adhesive are you planning to use?

Cheers
