What to do About Wood Stain on top of Varnish?

by Nobodylistens » Mon Jul 23, 2018 9:43 am

Hi all,

This is my first visit here, so, apologies if I'm not in the right part of the forum but I'm hoping someone can help me with a 'sticky' problem.

My parents were bought an expensive, solid wood, set of 3 coffee tables.

A few years ago, my Father had the brilliant idea of staining the wood the same shade as a display cabinet they owned.

Without any preperation to the wood he painted over the varnish with some ancient wood stain that he found in his shed.

You can imagine the results.

The tables are 'sticky', the colour comes off onto everything it touches & it is extremely streaky & patchy.

Apologies for the long story, but, does anyone have an thoughts on how I can remove this gunk without damaging the original varnish on the tables, please?

Thanks for your time.
