Wiring new double switch for outside lights and flood light

by Wilko33 » Sun Aug 30, 2020 9:42 am

Changing an old double switch. Left turns on 2 outside lights and right turns on a garden flood light. There is a second single switch in another room which operates the 2 outside lights independently. After replacement the left switch turns on the 2 outside lights and the flood light together and the right switch just turns on the floodlight. The single switch depends on the position of the double switch. Attaching the original wiring photo and the new. Any help appreciated.

Sorry to tell you this, but it is a fact of life that there is no rule that says what colour does what in regards to lighting, it is up to who ever wired it what colours they chose to do what.
So you will have to use trial and error, and next time before you do anything, mark the wires and take several clear in focus pictures.

I will however guess you have made a simple error in assuming that both switches are the same layout, I would guess if you compare the old switch with the new switch you will find the layout is NOT the same.
